Understanding Computers Day 1
Unit EQ:
How does a computer make a student or employee more productive?
LEQ:
What types of resources are available for students in the 21st century skills class.
Activating Strategies:
Start class with Ning on the screen. Tell students that they will be creating their own social networking home page today during class.
During this class they will be required to maintain this account as an assignment.
Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary:
Ning, Social Networking, Email, Network, Internet,
Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
Take Attendance. - Move kids to alphabetical seats
Have Students Login to Network

Login to gaggle account (see link on district home page) http://www.queensburyschool.org/gaggle_login/gaggle_login.html*
  • Explain the limitation of the Gaggle account.
    1. For teachers, students and administrators
    2. You can receive email from outsite networks but not send it.
    3. It allows us to sign up for web 2.0 services and supply an email account
    4. their email will be login@qufsd.gaggle.net
    5. some students may need to make themselve older on the login page to be accepted

Activating your Moodle Account.
  • Have students connect to Moodle from the district home page.
    1. login with your network ID and password.
    2. Select 21st Century skills.
    3. Choose enroll me in the is course and put in the key Silvernell.
    4. Moodle will be used for distribution of information, and handout copies, as well as quizzes.

NING * Have students activate their Ning Account using the email invitation in their gaggle account.
  • They will have to activate account and wait for teachers to complete the approval process. Check their gaggle for info.
  • Explain what the requirements are for the NING Account:
    1. Social networking site. Used to discuss this class and what we are learning.
    2. Not used to connect with other kids in other classes or outside your period.
    3. Required to access and at least add to their blog 3X per week.

Second Day
. Get students logged in to all accounts. Gaggle, Moodle, and NING. Have them finish their first Blog in NING in class or for homework
  • they can also change setting so they can use an alias name.
  • Teacher must approve their accounts once they login to NING by cecking the junkmail,
Summarizing Strategies:
Rules and requirements for these three resources will be emailed to each student's gaggle account.
Homework: Continue developing your social networking NING site. Make a Blog entry: "Does the class sound like fun."
